In this Masterclass, I take you inside the process directors use when working with actors for film and television.

Scripts are not instructions — they are blueprints, layered with meaning, intention and emotional truth that often sits beneath the surface. I have a detailed understanding of how to read those hidden levels, infer what is not written, and then respond to what the story truly requires.

When an actor genuinely feels emotion, the audience feels it too.  But on camera, emotion does not arise naturally — it must be generated truthfully and precisely. Playing at or pretending to feel emotion convinces no one.

And the emotion must be the right one — shaped by the story, character and situation. Reading this accurately is a considerable skill, and scripts give little away. 

As a director, I understand how to shape emotional flow across a scene and guide an actor to exactly what the story needs. 

As a screenwriter, I know how to infer the hidden emotional layers beneath the dialogue.

As an actor, you must be able to look deeply between the lines, and use your own experience and perception to inhabit the character’s world fully then play your own internal emotional landscape — with timing, control and sensitivity — in tune with the story.

Then you allow the audience access to the full, extraordinary range of storied human experience, and your work becomes truthful, compelling and eminently castable.

A focused 90-minute Screen Acting Masterclass led by BAFTA Award-Winning Film & TV Director and Screenwriter David Skynner, offering actors direct insight into how performances are read, shaped and selected behind the camera.
